Hobbes and Bacon 3 by Phill-Art Hobbes and Bacon 3 by Phill-Art
Here's my other H&B strips- phill-art.deviantart.com/galle…

I've always loved Calvin and Hobbes since I was really young. I recently came across a spin off comic on facebook by the guys from PANTSAREOVERRATED.com www.pantsareoverrated.com/page… It's based on Calvin and Susie as adults, where they are married and they have a daughter named Bacon (As far as her name I though it was awkward at first, but someone pointed out she is really named "Francis" and "Bacon" is the cute nickname her parents have given her. This would fall in line with the philosophical names of (John) Calvin and (Thomas) Hobbes). Sadly they only made four strips , so I'd like to continue it. It really inspired me and I instantly thought of the potential and different directions it could go, while still being loyal to Bill Watterson's style. What I loved most about Watterson's work was it wasn't confined to the real world, it went into Calvin's imagination, which gave all sorts of different visuals that a lot of newspaper funnies missed out on.

I have over 10 other strip ideas with Hobbes and Bacon that I want to share.

I'm really on the fence about continuing this, I've been doing a lot of reading on Watterson recently. He's very protective of his work and has the attitude that his work should stop with his retirement. It really would be selfish of me to continue it. Gahh, maybe just a few more... > < I love Calvin and Hobbes so much.

Maybe one day your stuff will be in a book shop of a collection of comic strips like calvin and hobbes but maybe called Hobbes and Bacon or Bacon and Hobbes! Go and draw I'm sure the fans will welcome this with open arms! I know I welcome this :).

Please continue. It fits very nicely with the original works, in content and style both.

While this on it's own was a very good comic, I really feel like it didn't catch the "spirit" of Bacon and Hobbes where Calvin very much sees himself in Bacon.

This is PRECISELY how I felt when I got kicked off the family computer and sent to a tower of giant books and a big paper was due tomorrow when I was a kid and Windows 95 was brand new. Nevermind all the fun things I could make the computer do that drove dad crazy! (like changing the startup picture to have a goofy face drawn on it)

Watterson's spirit lives on in you, Phill-Art. You really are capturing the imagination of childhood just like he did.

I completely understand your dilemma. Of course Bill Waterson has the right to protect his work and Calvin and Hobbes, but ultimately I would say that this is fan art and very good one at that. It has been delightful reading these and brought back fond memories. I do hope you continue and thank you so much for sharing! Quite the opposite of selfish.

I'm not sure that the two creators of Pants are Overrated really said her name was Francis, but they mentioned knowing a kid that got the nickname Bacon and that it matched Francis Bacon the philosopher nicely.
Far all it's worth she might be named Becky and it's one of those "can't pronounce the name correctly" things some kids end up gaining nicknames from for all their life (Sorry, read a lot Buffy fanfics recently where they can#t stop mentioning that's how Xander became Xander :D)

As for continuing... well it might be the greedy fan inside me, but i think your work showcases the original so well in both visual style and feeling, that it does honestly qualify as an hommage and not a cheap rip off that would devalue the original works... plus, it's not C&H but something new, isn't it? :D Have you got some snowman strips too? Those are the greatest, don't you think? :D

As long as it's non-profit, I see no harm in making these.

People do it all the time.

And the reason I'm saying this is because I miss Calvin and Hobbes too. Heck, it got me into art in the first place!

You do a great job!! :D

Quick question: I looked up the original Calvin & Bacon and aren't you just doing a spinoff of a spinoff? You should just do your own continuation of Calvin and Hobbes like others have done. You have the style down and can write your own strips. Why not create your own instead of deriving from a pre-existing continuation? Just feels like you're taking from 2 sets of artists now. Just sayin'  that's the impression. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Yep, it's just a spinoff of a spinoff, you're totally right,  I didn't intend to make much of these partly because of that. I saw so much potential in Hobbes and Bacon, I really couldn't see a better way to approach a spin off comic strip. I also liked the idea of how Hobbes' chemistry would be different with a girl, rather than a boy. I think the idea of Calvin having a daughter is just too perfect, even Watterson wrote he wanted to see a comic strip based on a little girl. One other spinoff comic of C&H that comes to mind is where Calvin and Susie are together and have a boy and a girl for kids, which is... ok... I dunno, seemed contrived imo.

In a way Watterson's work has finished and Hobbes and Bacon are a completely new thing set in the same universe. If it was a continuation of Calvin as a boy then yes that may be treading on Watterson's ideals but I see Bacon's life not as a continution but a new chapter.. if that makes sense.

I think this is absolutely awesome and completely true to the original. Bill Waterson should be flattered by your efforts.

the ones from Pantsareoverrated were great, and yours are equally great, but there is another set of 4 that aren't so good. the artwork is lacking and the story lines have lost the innocence of both Calvin and Bacon. I can understand Bil Waterson wanting to protect the integrity of his work, but I think he has nothing to fear from yours.

Personally I disagree on the point about Watterson, I think he's being selfish to say that- Stan Lee didn't have to, Jack Kirby didn't have to, Walt Disney didn't have to, A.A. Milne didn't have to, Simon and Schuster (the Superman men) didn't have to- why should HE? If Spider-Man and Superman and Winnie the Pooh and Donald Duck aren't too good to pass on to other hands, why is Calvin and Hobbes any different? They're the same. They spoke to generations. It's selfish not to let the new generations experience them just because 'integrity'.

Actually, in the cases of Pooh and Supes and the Disney stable, there was no creator's say- just corporations'. Milne wasn't around to approve Benedictus' 'Return to the Hundred Acre Wood', Siegel and Schuster had no creative say in what DC did with Superman, and Walt Disney may have run the company, but it was free to do whatever it wanted with the characters after he died- from the good stuff like Runaway Brain, to the awful disco merchandise of the 80's. Only reason Spider-Man's an exception to that rule is Stan Lee pretty much WAS Marvel Comics at the time. I find Watterson's stance more than a little pretentious- it's much better to let people try and add their own flavor, even when it results in travesties like One More Day or The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. To put your own work on a pedestal like that smacks of pretention to me. I respect Watterson. I heartily disagree with his wishes about merchandising and the future of the characters., but I respect him as an artist.

Well, the difference is in your own words, Zoid. They were "passed on" to other hands. That means with the creator's blessing. That's not the case here, much as I absolutely LOVE Hobbes & Bacon by the PaO guys and Phill here.

But copyright is copyright, and failure to demonstrate due diligence in defending that copyright can result in its forfeiture of that copyright. I'm a published novelist myself, and I can tell you it's mixed feelings seeing your work done by others who've done it without permission.

There's nothing I'd love more than to have Bill Watterson either start up Hobbes & Bacon or give his blessing - and permission - to someone like Phill. Lots of upsides to that, financial not being the least. But as much as it pains us, we MUST Watterson's wishes. It's the least we owe to a creative genius who gave us Calvin & Hobbes for ten glorious years.
